Audi Plugs in A6 Avant with 32-mile Electric Range
Audi already brought us the fast version of the A6 Avant, now it’s time for the green one. The A6 Avant e quattro plug-in hybrid adds an electric motor and battery to the people and stuff hauler to help it use less fuel and give it an all-electric range that’ll get most people through their day. Don’t worry, though, it’s still got plenty of shove.
The A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro is a horrible name to stick on a boot lid, but a pretty good-looking powertrain to have under the metal. It combines a 2.0L TFSI four-cylinder with a beefy electric motor that’s integrated into the seven-speed gearbox to give it all-wheel-drive no matter which powerplant is doing the powering.
The gas engine makes 249 hp, backed with 273 lb-ft of torque. Along with it is a 141 hp electric motor that makes 258 lb-ft. The total is 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It’s not the 600+ hp of the RS6 Avant, but it’s nothing to sneeze at and it comes with some clever winning tricks of its own.
Like the ability to hit 84 mph on electric power only, letting you glide quietly down the highway at speeds that’ll get you a ticket pretty much anywhere in the world. The electric battery is enough to give it just shy of 32 miles of range without using gas, and that’s enough to give it a 50 percent company car tax reduction in its home market.
Max acceleration will let the A6 plug-in hit 62 mph in 5.7 seconds from a stop, and flat out with the engine running it’s limited to 250 km/h. Audi’s given it an EV drive mode to keep it on the battery as long as possible, a Hybrid mode that maximizes electric drive while allowing the gas engine to help as needed, and a Hold mode that keeps the charge steady so you can use it later. Like if you’re on a highway run to the next city, where you can then use electric power in stop-and-go city driving. Predictive efficiency assist uses navigation, traffic data, and your driving style to plan ahead to deliver optimal fuel economy.
The myAudi app will let owners manage charging and set the climate control before departure, ideal to heat or cool the car while it’s still plugged in, helping to maximize range. The 7.4 kWh battery can be topped up in just 2.5 hours. The battery pack does take up some room in the hatch, though, dropping cargo space with the seats up to 14.3 cubic feet (down about six). With the seats all flat, cargo space is 54.2L, again about six less than non-plug-in versions.
